It’s raining in The O.C – something that rarely happens.

Since neither want to go out in the rain, Seth and Ryan discuss their problems with Summer and Lindsay on the phone. Seth is afraid that if Summer goes to Italy with Zach, then he’ll lose her forever; and Ryan is worried about how distant Lindsay has been since Caleb asked for a DNA test.

Kirsten is depressed about Sandy’s involvement with Rebecca to the point of not even getting out of bed. Sandy apologises to her, but then receives a phone call from Rebecca in which he tries to convince her to stay so that they can work on her case.

At the Nichol house, Marissa introduces Alex to Julie and then tells her that Alex is her girlfriend.

Ryan goes to see Lindsay and she admits that she’s afraid to find out whether Caleb is her father or not and she tells him that if she’s not Caleb’s daughter she will move to Chicago with her mother.

While Summer is trying on her bridesmaid dress for Zach’s sister’s wedding, Seth calls to see her wearing a Spiderman mask (It’s waterproof and hats don’t suit him). Seth talks about how it must be serious between her and Zach if she’s going to be part of his sister’s wedding and leaves feeling disappointed.

Sandy meets up with Rebecca to convince her not to run and later the two of them get stuck in a road block because of the rain.

Marissa goes to Alex’s and tells her that she has told her mother about their relationship. She also tells Alex that she can’t go home, so Alex says that she should stay with her. Marissa then goes home to pack and tells Julie that she’s moving out.

Sandy and Rebecca end up staying at a motel together because of the road block. Rebecca makes a move on Sandy, but he stops her and goes outside to phone Kirsten to say goodnight.

Seth is depressed about Summer going to Italy with Zach, but then has an idea. He decides to buy back the Summer Breeze and take her out on it. First, he needs money, so he goes to see Alex to ask for his job back and for an advance payment (which he gets) and he discovers that Alex and Marissa are now in a relationship.

Seth buys back his boat, which has been modified and is now called ‘Gimmie Sex’.

While Seth tells Ryan what he discovered about Marissa and Alex, Kirsten informs them that Lindsay has phoned to say that the DNA test results are back.

As Summer and Zach are leaving for the airport, Seth phones and asks Summer to come over so that they can talk, but she refuses.

Sandy and Rebecca, having left the motel, get into a car accident. Someone who saw the accident calls 911, so Rebecca runs for fear of being arrested when the police arrive.

Lindsay’s test results show that Caleb is her father. However, she still decides to move to Chicago with her mother. She tells Ryan that leaving him is very difficult, but she could never leave her mother.

At the airport, Seth phones Summer and she doesn’t answer. However, as soon as she’s alone, she listens to the message he left. Summer then sees a little boy playing with a toy horse, which reminds her of Seth. She realises that she should be with Seth and says sorry to Zach before leaving the airport.

Sandy, having been delayed by a road block and a car accident finally gets home to Kirsten on a bus.

Seth, still depressed about Summer leaving, sits down for an evening of TV, but the TV’s not working. Seth climbs up on the roof (in his waterproof Spiderman mask) to try and fix the satellite, but falls and is left hanging upside down from the roof. Summer then arrives and kisses Seth.

    Episode Allusions

Abigail: Are you a fan of Botticelli?
Summer: Yes, yes, I am. Although, I prefer his earlier work. You know, the comedies.

Botticelli is a famous painter of the Italian renaissance. Summer seems to be referring to William Shakespeare.

Seth: "The Hand Smearing the Window"
As In the beginning when Seth puts his hand on the window and pulls it down (On this rainy day), it seems as a reference from the movie "The Titanic". As Jack and Rose are making love in the car aboard the ship, she puts her hand on the foggy window (as In the beginning of this episode) and pulls it down, smearing the window.

    Seth: Eureka, Ryan!
While the Eureka Stockade (the revolt of miners against colonial authority in Ballarat) was a relatively significant event in Australian history, the term 'eureka' was originally attributed to Archimedes, who is said to have run through the streets of Syracuse naked after finally understanding the concept of bouyancy.

Seth: "'The Valley' has got its own reality show knock-off."
Seth is planning to watch the marathon of "Sherman Oaks: The Real Valley" a reality spin-off of the fictional TV show "The Valley." This could be a possible reference to MTV's "Laguna Beach," an OC spin-off.

    Seth: "yesssssss"
When seth puts up his right arm and says "yessssssssss" it sounded like it was a reference to the movie Napoleon Dynamite.

    Episode Trivia

Goof: Before Sandy calls Kirsten to tell her he won't be making it home, she is lying in bed. Then the phone rings and from the top view you can see the frame is face down on the table. When she answers the phone it is standing up right and she also looks at it.

Goof: When they are discussing the mess of their lives over rum and cigars, Kirsten passes the comment "a fugitive, who USED TO BE his ex-girlfriend". You can't "used to be" someone's ex-girlfriend... you're either an "ex", or you're not.

Goof: Seth likens the rain to the opening scene of Day After Tomorrow. In fact, the opening scene of that movie takes place on an Antarctic Ice Shelf in perfectly clear weather. The abnormal storms (blizzards, hail, tornadoes, etc) do not occur until somewhat later in the film.

Goof: Sandy blames the rain on El Nino (a weather phenomenon that occurs every several years which causes heavy rain storms) but it is not an El Nino season, and anyone on the West Coast of North America knows when it is or isn't an El Nino season.

Goof: At the 7.54 mark of the episode look how Ryan tumbles into the room he falls face flat through the window unless he did a double flip there is no way that he landed face first into the floor.

    Episode Quotes

Seth: Ohh ... I've missed you. It's been too long.

Ryan: You're talking to a boat, Seth.

Seth: Yeah, I talk to a plastic horse, too, but that never worries anyone.

Seth: Our noses grazed. And it was like the most sexually charged nose-graze in the history of nose grazes. It's essentially nose-humping, is what it is.

Seth: (See's Marissa and Alex together) Hold it. Just wanted to make sure I had the visual. Yup. Got it

Julie: I don't think it's too much to ask to know what's going on under my roof.
Marissa: Oh. You want to know what's going on with me? I am going to tell you the truth. No screaming, no crying, just the truth.
Julie: You have no idea how happy it makes me to hear that.
Marissa: Hold that thought. Alex is my girlfriend.
Julie: I know, and I am so happy that you have made a new friend. Although, I hope you keep seeing Summer...
Marissa: No Mom, not my friend who's a girl. My girlfriend.
[thunder rumbles in the distance as Julie looks shocked]
    Marissa: Yeah.

Marissa walks in from the bedroom wearing a skimpy robe
Marissa: Hey Alex, should I be getting dressed or are we going back to... [sees Seth standing in the living room as Alex walks in from the kitchen]
    Marissa: ...bed?
    Seth: Oh My God.
    Marissa: Oh My God.
    Alex: Oh My God.
Seth rubs eyes and makes squeaky sounds
Seth: [to Alex] Let me get this straight. You broke up with me, for Marissa?
Alex: Do you want your money? Seth: Hey, who better than a superhero understands secret identity? Now hold on, just want to make sure I have the visual.
    [Marissa looks uncomfortable]
Seth: Okay I got it, great, thank you. Hey listen, Alex. Thank you. Both of you. For everything, I mean, keep doing what you're doing, I like it.
