Sandy reluctantly serves as host/auctioneer at yet another OC benefit; Trey lies to Ryan to prove that he can be self-dependent; Carter reinvigorates Seth and Zach's comic book dream, much to the annoyance of Summer. Marissa moves in with the Cohens.

    Episode Allusions

Zach: So who's Curt Schilling anyway?
Curt Schilling is a pitcher for the Boston Red Sox. He is most famous for being part of the pitching combination of Schilling and Randy Johnson in the 2001 World Series, which helped win the series. He is also well known for his ankle bleeding through his sock during the 2004 ALCS. This has become a symbol for that time period in the Red Sox history.

Marissa: (to Summer) All that Antiques Roadshow really paid off.
Antiques Roadshow is a PBS series where professional antique appraisers criss-cross the country looking at people's antiques that they bring in, and giving them information about the origins of their piece, and an estimate of the value.

Multiple: many references to Tom Cruise and his movies Risky Business, Top Gun, Cocktail, Vanilla Sky, and Jerry Maguire
Tom Cruise is considered by some to be one of the top 100 movie stars of all time, one of the highest paid and most sought after actors in screen history. From the outset, he exhibited an undeniable box office appeal to both male and female audiences.

Sandy/Trey: references to Steve McQueen and his movies Bullitt and The Great Escape
Truly one of the most loved actors of his generation, Steve McQueen was known for his wild antics and crazy lifestyle. He loved motorcycles and fast cars. He performed most of his stunts and many he wasn't supposed to. He played many great roles. Girls wanted him and men wanted to be him.

    Ryan: reference to "Seagal"
Steven Seagal is a tall, striking and somewhat boyishly handsome looking (often with ponytail), and usually impeccably dressed action star who burst onto the martial arts film scene in 1988 in the fast paced Warner Bros. production "Above The Law" (1988). Seagal's debut movie was wildly received by action fans. Whilst his fan appeal has somewhat declined from his halcyon blockbusters of the mid 1990s, Seagal still has a very loyal fan base in the action movie genre and continues to remain a highly bankable star.

    Episode Notes

    Music:
    "Play" by Flunk
    "Sister Jack" by Spoon
    "Banquet" by Bloc Party
"Love On A Real Train" by Tangerine Dream
    "Legendary" by Lou Barlow
    "Marvo Ging" by Chemical Brothers

Seth comments on how "some people think Chivalry is dead, I don't see it". Back in 1x07, Seth tells Summer "Chivalry is dead, sugar".

A wax lion can be seen as one of the auction items. This could be a shout-out to the Cancelled-By-Fox-Series Wonderfalls.

The scene where Ryan and Marissa are sitting by the pool at the end of the episode was very reminiscent of the final scene of 1x25, "The Shower".

The scene where Ryan gave Marissa his coat at the end of the episode was very reminiscent of the final scene of 1x04, "The Debut".

    Episode Trivia

Trey said that he earned 400 dollars, but he would have gotten 200 because half of the money went to charity and Zach got half of what was left.

Goof: The crystal egg should have been noticed missing long before Ryan noticed it. In an auction, the pieces being auctioned are put on display before the auction so the people can examine them and see exactly what they are and decide what they want to pay for them. So the missing piece should have been noticed when the items were put out for display hours before the actual auction started.

Goof: When Sandy introduces Marissa and Summer, you hear his announcer voice say "And here are our lovely assistants", but as an echoed/magnified voice is heard, Sandy is moving the mic away from his mouth on "assistants" and begins clapping. Right after this, we cut to a shot of Marissa and Summer then back to Sandy, whose microphone has mysteriously disappeared from his hand.

Goof: When Ryan walks by Seth at school and pushes him into the locker, he has a cup of coffee in his hand as he walks toward Seth. When he's walking away, he has nothing in his hands.

The crystal egg in this episode is slightly different then the crystal egg from Risky Business. If they were going to have a plot point dealing with a prop from this movie wouldn't you think they would get the actual egg that was in the movie or one that looked exactly like it?

    Episode Quotes

Sandy: A charity event where the donors keep half the profits and a yard sale with no yard. Hum! So, that's how they do it in the O.C.

Sandy: Joanne. Tell me you didn't order those napkin rings. This is not a mob wedding.

Trey: This is the crystal egg from Risky Business?
Joan: Well, it's not the F-14 from Top Gun.

    Trey: What's a "Newpsie"?
Sandy: They're like vultures, except the Newpsies like to paint their talons. Actually, they'd rather have somebody else paint their talons. Oop. Here comes a flock right now

Ryan: What are you making? Mom's hangover special?
Trey: What do you mean? A pack of smokes and a fresh cocktail?
